My Dad

Many of you may know that my dad, Frank Luter, has had chronic severe back pain for several years now.  He has undergone a variety of procedures over the years, to try to correct problem or alleviate the pain, but none have been particularly beneficial at this point.  He has also spent several years on extremely high doses of pain reliever which makes him very sleepy and groggy all the time. Recently, the doctor has decided that the next step (and hopefully the LAST) is to install a pump in him which will send morphine directly to his spine, bypassing his digestive and circulatory system.  This will allow him to be on a MUCH lower dose of medication, allowing him to be more alert and functional, as well as protecting the rest of his body from the long-term effects of the drugs.  Initially they will be inserting a temporary, and less invasive pump.  This will be for the purpose of gauging how much relief he experiences, and determining whether a permanent pump truly is the best solution.  It will really be up to my dad to decide whether the relief is enough to make the procedure worthwhile.   In the mean time, my dad is in the process of weaning himself off of his pain medication, which is a very difficult and painful process.  He must do this before he can have the temporary pump inserted next week.  If all goes well, they will install the permanent pump about a month later. We are all very eager to see the results of this!  Please pray for my father as he continues going through the difficult process of withdrawing from his medication this week, and for his safety as he has the first procedure next week.  Pray that he would receive dramatic relief from his pain.  Pray also that God would direct the doctors hands, that they would perform the procedure properly.

A Big Step In The Right Direction

I haven't really posted much in the last few weeks because things have been a little crazy around here.  Mostly a lot of good and exciting stuff, but a few things that I'm just not quite ready to post about yet. One thing I am VERY excited to share is that my dear husband, Noob, started his first day of school this morning!  He is getting his CNA+ training at DRM Genesis in Lansing.  It is a 6 week full time program, with 4 weeks in the classroom and 2 weeks of clinicals.  By the end of March, he could have a whole new career!  We're both very excited!  From what we've been told, the typical starting wage is several dollars an hour more than he is currently making... AND (drum roll please) it's year around work!  What a concept! HA!  He will most likely work three 12 hour shifts a week, so for a while he will continue doing landscaping part time. We are thrilled by the thought of how this could WILL change our lives for the better and help us to more quickly reach some of our financial and life goals!
  • #1 GOAL - Pay down a lot more debt.
  • #2 GOAL - Buy a house.
  • #3 GOAL - Start a family.
  • And lots more I'll share at a later date!
Please pray for Noob about his schooling that he would enjoy his time, be motivated to work hard, and that he would do well!  Pray also for us as we work toward our goals as well as for some other exciting opportunities that have recently come our way (more on that as things progress).  Pray that we will make wise decisions about everything we do, that God would be the center our decisions, and that HE would be glorified through it all!

The Cracked Pot by Frank Agin

An elderly Chinese woman had two large pots – each hung on the ends of a pole which she carried across her neck. Each day, she would venture down to the stream, fill the pots and trek back to her home to use the water for her household chores. While the two pots appeared identical, one had a crack in it and the other pot was a perfect vessel. The perfect pot always delivered a full portion of water at the end of the long walk from the stream to the house. Unfortunately, however, the cracked pot arrived only half full each day. For years, the elderly woman brought home only one and a half pots of water. Of course, the perfect pot was proud of its accomplishments. But the poor cracked pot was ashamed of its own imperfection, and miserable that it could only do half of what it had been made to do. After years of what it perceived to be bitter failure, the cracked pot spoke to the woman one day by the stream. “I am ashamed of myself, because this crack in my side causes water to leak out all the way back to your house.” The woman smiled, “Did you notice that there are flowers on your side of the path, but not on the other pot’s side? That’s because I have always known about your flaw, so I planted flower seeds on your side of the path, and every day while we walk back, you water them. For years I have been able to pick these beautiful flowers to decorate the table. Without you being just the way you are, there would not be this beauty to grace the house.”

AI

I'm not typically a big American Idol watcher, but I definitely enjoy the auditions.   I find it interesting though that they tend to focus more on the terrible people than they do on the talented ones during the audition phase.  Oh well, gives me a good laugh!  And since when did Randy become the mean one?  Apparently neither Steven Tyler nor Jennifer Lopez wanted to fill the nasty role of Simon.  I think I might actually enjoy those two more than their predecessors!

Lobster & Crab Quiche

Several people asked for this recipe so I though I'd post it here!  I used imitation Crab & Lobster because it was a lot cheaper, but would probably taste a lot better with the real thing.   1 Frozen Deep Dish Pie Crust 3 oz Crab Meat 3 oz Lobster Meat 1/2 c Fried Onion Rings 1 c Shredded Cheddar 8 oz Sour Cream 3 Eggs   Spread meat, onions, and cheese in crust. Beat eggs and fold in sour cream. Pour over ingredients in crust. Bake at 400 for 30 minutes.

35 Things To Do Before I Turn 35 (2011 Resolutions)

Since I recently had a birthday as well as it being a new year, I decided to make a list of 35 things I want to do before I turn 35.  The deadline is my birthday, December 5th, 2011, so I’ve got almost the whole year minus Christmas (and surrounding holiday time) when I rarely do anything productive (non-holiday related) anyway.  I intend to create an alternate list of a few things I can do additionally, or in case I am unable to complete another one of the 35 tasks.
